Connecting with our community

Being part of the communities we serve is central to our work at UnitingSA and what better way to get involved than through events. Each year, we host and take part in a diverse range of events to celebrate days of significance, highlight services and connect with our community.

Paying it forward at Movie Night

Our inaugural Movie Night attracted hundreds of participants and supporters, including Jeanette Buckland, 88, who received a free ticket as part of a new Pay it Forward initiative. Jeanette is one of the thousands of people helped by UnitingSA’s Emergency Relief services, and knows first-hand the struggles of doing it tough and the mental toll of loneliness. Around 100 Pay it Forward tickets were purchased for people just like Jeanette, allowing them to enjoy a night at the movies – a luxury that is often beyond their reach.

The launch of our Westminster Redevelopment

Our new 37-bed wing at Westminster Village Aged Care was officially opened by the Hon. Mark Butler MP, Federal Minister for Health and Aged Care. The spacious $11.4 million redevelopment took just over 12 months to create and includes stunning internal courtyards and ensuite rooms, allowing us to provide optimal care in a modern environment with all the comforts of home.

Melbourne Cup

Our aged care community enjoy dozens of special events throughout the year, helping to enrich the day to day lives of the people we care for. This includes enjoying the fun and excitement of Melbourne Cup Day. Residents participate in the annual sweeps and our employees and volunteers create beautiful afternoon teas and gather to watch the big race.

Pancake Day

Pancake Day is an annual celebration that helps us raise funds to support our Emergency Relief services. All the funds raised from the day were given to our homelessness and emergency relief teams, so that we could provide supermarket vouchers and food hampers for families and individuals doing it tough.

Pride Month

To mark the start of Pride Month, our team raised the Progress Pride Flag on a new flagpole at our Family Centre in Port Adelaide. The flag is a symbol of our support for the LGBTIQA+ community – but behind the symbol, UnitingSA is committed to everyone feeling safe and included in our workplace and community. This speaks to our vision of a compassionate, respectful and just community in which all people participate and flourish.
